United States visa for Nigerian citizens

The US has partially suspended new visa issuance for Nigerian citizens since January 1, 2026. Travellers who already hold a valid US visa are not affected.

Effective January 1, 2026, the United States partially suspended new visa issuance to Nigerian citizens — including B1/B2 visitor, F/M student, and J exchange visas — under Presidential Proclamation 10998. This does not revoke visas issued before that date; travellers who already hold a valid, unexpired US visa are not affected. Because this situation can change, always check the official US Embassy Nigeria notice before making travel plans or payments tied to US entry.

Fee

USD 185 non-immigrant visa application (MRV) fee for B1/B2 — though new issuance is currently restricted for most Nigerian applicants (see notice below).

Processing time

Historically 3–8 weeks after interview, though interview wait times at Nigerian posts have run into many months in recent years, before the January 2026 restriction.

Max stay

Up to 6 months per visit (at officer discretion) for B1/B2, when a visa can be issued.

Who needs this

All Nigerian citizens travelling to the US for tourism, business, or study normally need a visa (B1/B2, F, M, or J depending on purpose) — but see the urgent notice below before planning any US trip.

Document checklist

  3. 3Pay the MRV fee and schedule an interview at the Embassy in Abuja or Consulate in Lagos
